Rice soup

My “Story behind a picture” series contains posts, where I present one photo only, and a commentary to explain the context and what is happening there. All of these mini stories are either interesting, shocking, nice, extraordinary, or perhaps typical for a given community or place, but strange for visitors from elsewhere. Or they are simply interesting from some other point of view. Anyway, I will try to keep them short. (And sweet? – we will see.)

Rice soup with an egg, Chiang Mai style

In Chiang Mai, one of favourite places had quite a lot of options, and after a few weeks, I realized that I just avoided some of the food on the menu – the cheapest ones actually, because for some reason I thought it can’t be very good if it is so cheap. A very stupid idea of course!

Now one of these was the rice soup. You can order it with chicken or beef, I opted for chicken. The waitress asked me if I wanted eggs with it, and I said why not. And this is how it looks.

Nicely covered with a little grated cheese, doesn’t look bad at all, I thought, but I was wrong. That white stuff is not cheese, but some kind of vegetable perhaps, and I can’t say I liked it.

But then when you stir it a little, it turns out that they simply put a raw egg in it, which I don’t find very inviting, to say the least. So I ended up trying to scoop some of the soup without disturbing the egg part, with more or less (definitely less!) success. The rice is either originally crushed or boiled to the point when you can’t already recognize rice grains in it at all.

And then another surprise: you also have noodles in it! Great combination, although I am not sure I will call it a favourite…
